As the clock ticks away the few short hours, it’s possible some may wonder, What is WriteFest , really? Your answer is a click away.

Due to an email glitch, any emails that were sent to novels@sandycurtis on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th April may not have got  through and no notification of them bouncing would have been received by the sender. If anyone emailed anything – publisher/writer interview submission, masterclass submission, or entry for sponsorship – and hasn’t received an acknowledgement-of-receipt email back, can they please re-send to sandra.curtis@internode.on.net

Apologies for any inconvenience.

Your chance to be a WriteFest Winner: Sponsorships available for three lucky writers.

2013 has been a trying year for the people of Queensland in many ways. But we’re Queenslanders and giving a helping hand is part of who we are. So this year a WriteFest sponsor, Sunbrix, is offering to sponsor three writers to this year’s WriteFest, to be held on May 18.

For your chance to claim a sponsored place, write 100 words showing us why WriteFest is important to developing your writing career. Email your story in the body of the email, subject line Sunbrix Opportunity, to info@bundywriters.com together with your name and address and contact details.

Your passionate words may be used in promotional material for the Bundaberg WriteFest in 2013 and 2014.

All writers from across Queensland and Australia can take advantage of this great opportunity, but at least one of the writers selected will be from within the Bundaberg Regional Council area.

The sponsorship only includes the WriteFest admission fee ($75) and covers no other expenses such as travel, accommodation or the Masterclass fee. However, successful writers can, if they wish, put their sponsorship towards the Masterclass fee and pay the difference themselves.

Sponsorship cannot be exchanged for goods or cash.

Entries must be submitted by 26 April.

Lucky winners will be notified by 3 May, and the sponsor’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

The 2013 WriteFest booking form is now available.

You can open it here or find it on our Booking Information page.

Remember, WriteFest is on Saturday 18 May 2013 so don’t delay in checking out our Program so you can think about which fantastic workshops you’d like to attend.

We’ve updated the Program page with Dr John Clarke’s workshops. Check them out below, and don’t forget to fill in your booking form for WriteFest on Saturday, 19 May.

Inside the Criminal Mind (morning workshop)

This session will examine the psychology underlying a variety of criminal behaviours including sex crimes, homicide, stalking, and property crime. This talk will be useful to writers who want to understand what these types of offenders do and why they do it so they can write a more realistic criminal character.

During the last half hour of this session Dr John will answer questions either asked by attendees in that session or written questions submitted during the morning.

What Makes Us Who We Are? (afternoon workshop)

This session will examine the psychology of love, sexual attraction, friendship, group dynamics and people’s behaviour in the social world. It will also cover lie detection and human emotion, as well as occupational psychology specific to the law enforcement environment. It will be of use to writers who want to understand how people interact with each other and why people do the things they do in society.

During the last half hour of this session Dr John will answer questions either asked by attendees in that session or written questions submitted during the day.

The deadline for submissions to the Masterclass, Editor/Writer Consultations and Publisher/Writer Interviews has been extended to Friday, 20th of April.

If you’d like to get together with fellow WriteFest participants and with the WriteFest presenters, join us at a meet-and-greet dinner at 6.30pm Friday, 18th May at the Bargara Golf Club, Miller Street, Bargara (15 minutes drive from Bundaberg). Meals can be selected from the menu board (including specials).
Please email Sandy on novels@sandycurtis.com if you intend coming so she can ensure there will be sufficient seating for everyone.

Get advice from a professional Editor!

Editor and Publishing Assistant Rachael Donovan from Allen & Unwin Publishers will be attending the Bundaberg writers’ festival, WriteFest, on May 19 and advising selected writers on how to improve their query letter, synopsis, and manuscript sample.

Rachael will do this by conducting editor/writer consultations with six writers who have been selected by her based on their submitted work having the potential to hold an editor’s interest or be close to this level.

These consultations will not lead to the writer being requested to submit a full manuscript or considered for a contract. They are offered as an advice session only.

Writers are required to submit the first 50 pages (in industry-standard format) of their manuscript, together with a two-page single-line-spaced synopsis and covering letter outlining details of their writing experience and publishing history (if any).

The first 50 pages must be from a completed manuscript ready for submission to a publisher – first drafts are not acceptable.

Submissions will be read by a team of experienced professionals and the best will be forwarded to Rachael who will select the six she will consult with, and those writers must be attending WriteFest.

Each submission must be accompanied by an entry fee of $25. This entry fee is non-refundable but will be taken off the entry fee to the WriteFest workshops ($75) or masterclass ($95), or combined two days of workshops and masterclass ($145).

Submissions and entry fee can be posted to the Bundaberg Writers’ Club Inc, PO Box 1486, Bundaberg Qld 4670, or emailed to novels@sandycurtis.com provided the entry fee, or a receipt for a direct deposit to the Bundaberg Writers’ Club Inc is posted in. The Club’s bank details are Wide Bay Australia, BSB 656400, Account No. 104337281.

Successful applicants will be notified at least two weeks before the event. As reading and assessing the submissions will take the editor some time, we would appreciate writers submitting as early as possible. All submissions must be received by 15 April.

Any queries should be made to novels@sandycurtis.com or PO Box 1486, Bundaberg Qld 4670.
